Homage to a King is an Opera based on the historic “Beyond Vietnam” speech delivered on April 4, 1967, by Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King, who had become by then the country’s most prominent opponent of the Vietnam War and was at odds with the United States militaristic foreign policy, in this speech at a meeting of Clergy and Laity Concerned About Viet Nam at Riverside Church, denounced the U.S. as the greatest source of violence in the world.
Maestro Julius Williams has set moments of the Riverside Church speech to music, to be sung by American bass Kevin Maynor, accompanied by two French horns, two trombones, and bass voice.
